Flame Arresters: Distillery and Flammable Liquid Storage

Elmac Technologies safety devices are used to provide world-class explosion prevention in various distillery applications. Distilleries and food additive companies deal with volatile chemicals with low flash points. Flammable liquid containers are numerous, both as larger flammable liquid tanks and as smaller storage units. Storage and internal transportation (through pipes) require flame arresters, breathing valves and emergency vents.

Noncombustible, vapor-tight construction should be used for all tanks containing flammable concentrations of alcohol and flammable liquid tanks should be kept tightly closed except when taking samples. Tanks should be equipped with vents of adequate size terminating outdoors. Vents should be equipped with flame arresters if the flashpoint of the contents is less than 100° F (38° C).

Distillery and flammable liquid container safety systems include:

• Vents for storage tanks in production and bonded areas
• Both in-line and end-of-line arresters are fitted on the vent nozzles of distillery storage tanks
• In-line arresters are used where the gas or vapour needs to be vented at a safe distance from the tank or vent
